Howell City Police are investigating a shooting involving a toddler, who later died.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in the Rolling Oaks subdivision, located off of Byron Road, just north of M-59.
The Howell Police Department and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1900 block of Oak Squire Lane for a report of a shooting that had just occurred.
It was reported that a 2 1⁄2 year-old child had gained access to an unsecured firearm that resulted in an accidental shooting. The child was immediately transported by EMS to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor by arriving first responders, but was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators are currently conducting their investigation and no additional details are available at this time.
However, according to police scanner traffic, a woman at the home was asleep when the toddler got a hold of the firearm and shot themself with it.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Howell Police with the investigation.
