Florida maintains its status as the leading state in the United States for shark attacks, as indicated by the most recent information from the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) at the Florida Museum of Natural History.
In the year 2023, the state known for its sunny weather experienced 16 unexpected shark encounters. The percentage shown corresponds to 44% of the total in the United States and 23% of unprovoked bites globally.

According to Dr. Gavin Naylor, who is in charge of the ISAF program, Florida has consistently held the highest position worldwide in terms of shark attacks, and this trend continued in 2023. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that the 16 cases documented last year fall below Florida’s average of 19 incidents per year over the past five years.
Delving deeper into the data, Volusia County, known for its renowned beaches such as Daytona, was responsible for half of Florida’s shark attacks in 2023, with a total of eight documented cases. This aligns with the county’s typical yearly average of nine occurrences over five years.

The leftover morsels were spread out among various counties such as Brevard, St. Lucie, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Escambia, and Pinellas. Even though they are at the top of the list for shark attacks, specialists highlight that the chances of being bitten by a shark are still very slim.
According to the ISAF, the majority of bites in Florida occur during surfing and board sports, making up 42% of cases, with swimming and wading following closely behind at 39%.
