CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Lincoln Park Zoo has confirmed that two animals recently died from the bird flu, marking the zoo’s first cases of this disease.
The zoo shared that a Chilean flamingo named Teal and a harbor seal named Slater were the victims of the “highly pathogenic avian influenza.” Teal was a young flamingo that hatched just last fall, while Slater was a 7-year-old seal.
Officials at the zoo are deeply saddened by the loss and have explained that these are the first known instances of bird flu among their animals. They assured the public that visitors are not at risk from this outbreak.
As a precaution, some bird species will be kept out of public view. The McCormick Bird House has been temporarily closed to protect other animals and prevent the virus from spreading further.
The zoo is closely monitoring its animals and taking all necessary measures to ensure their safety. For now, they ask visitors to remain patient as the situation is being handled with care.
