A teenage girl in Georgia is in critical condition after a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Cobb County Middle School.
The incident happened at Lindley Middle School around 2:45 p.m., according to Cobb County school police. Officials said the girl used a firearm to harm herself.
Police and first responders quickly reached the student, arriving within 90 seconds. The school was briefly put on lockdown, but authorities confirmed it was secure soon after.
“All the other students are safe,” said Sgt. John McCraw from the Cobb County School District Police Department. Students were safely evacuated, and parents reunited with their children at Leland United Methodist Church nearby.
Sgt. McCraw praised the swift action of officers, noting that one officer was already present on campus when the incident occurred. “Our response was overwhelming and quick,” he said.
After confirming there was no threat to other students, the lockdown was lifted. Police said the injured girl, who has not been identified, was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She remains in critical condition, and her family is by her side.
Authorities are still investigating how the student brought a gun to school. “It’s early in the investigation,” McCraw stated.
“We don’t know yet how the weapon got into the school or where it was before the incident.” Police plan to interview students to gather more details.
Chairwoman Lisa Cupid of the school district shared a statement expressing sympathy for the student and their family.
