A man accused of causing a deadly drunk-driving crash on Christmas Day in 1998 is back in custody in Florida after decades on the run. Patrick Lutts has been returned to Orange County following his arrest in Toronto, Canada, bringing a long-standing case closer to resolution.
The crash occurred on Dec. 25, 1998, along State Road 528 in Orlando. Authorities say the collision claimed the lives of 19-year-old Nancy Lopez Leon and 18-year-old Darvin DeJesus.

Investigators determined that Lutts was intoxicated at the time of the crash. According to officials, his blood alcohol concentration was more than three times the legal limit when the fatal accident occurred.
The devastating crash led to criminal charges, and prosecutors later reached a plea agreement with Lutts in connection to the incident.
Plea Deal and Failure to Appear in Court
As part of the legal agreement, Lutts agreed to serve 10 years in prison. However, authorities say he never appeared in court for sentencing.
Instead, he fled and remained a fugitive for several decades. Despite being on the run, Lutts reportedly had encounters with international authorities over the years.
In 2003, he attempted to enter Canada but was denied entry because of the open criminal case in Florida.
Arrest in Toronto After Tip From Florida
The search for Lutts eventually gained momentum after investigators received a tip indicating he was living in Toronto. Canadian authorities located and arrested him in May 2023.
Following his arrest, Lutts was returned to Florida, where he is now being held at the Orange County Jail. He is currently awaiting sentencing in connection to the 1998 crash.
What Happens Next
With Lutts back in custody, the case is expected to proceed toward sentencing under the terms of the original plea agreement, though officials have not yet announced a specific court date.
The return of the fugitive marks a significant development in a case that has remained unresolved for more than two decades, offering long-awaited progress for the families of the victims.
