Fire burns through the day at Hamburg waste facility

A fire Wednesday afternoon at a Hamburg Township-based waste removal facility continued to burn into the evening.

The Hamburg Township Department of Public Safety reported that fire crews were on the scene of a second alarm structure fire beginning at 12:45 p.m. at Monroe’s Rubbish Removal located at 10025 Industrial Drive.

Assistance was provided by multiple surrounding agencies, including Brighton, Green Oak Township, Putnam Township and Northfield Township. As of 6:30 p.m., officials said the scene was still active and intermittent road closures in the area of M36 and Industrial Drive were likely to continue.

The fire was finally reported to be extinguished around 8 p.m.

In addition, users on the LCWA Municipal Water System were also advised that they could  experience low water pressure/volume and water discoloration. Due to the size of the fire, water filtration systems had to be shut down to supply enough water.

A notice on the company’s website said that they will be closed through the weekend due to the fire, but planned to reopen on Monday.
