As the academic year moves into its second half, it’s the perfect time for students to explore scholarship opportunities.
The Fort Cavazos Family Scholarship Fund (FCSF) is now accepting applications, offering financial support to high school seniors and spouses connected to the Fort Cavazos community.
Founded in 1985, the FCSF works to make education more accessible by providing scholarships to high school seniors and spouses who are dependents of active-duty service members, veterans, and Gold Star families.
The scholarship program covers Bell, Coryell, McLennan, Travis, Williamson, and Lampas counties.
Jennie Campbell, FCSF president, highlighted the sacrifices military families make. “Military spouses and children sacrifice a great deal to support their service member,” she said.
“Frequent moves can make it hard to establish roots and access community support, but despite these challenges, military families remain resilient and contribute immensely to their communities.”
The scholarship application window is now open and will close on February 17 at 11:59 p.m.
To apply, candidates must submit an original 500–700 word essay based on a question provided by the FCSF and other required documents.
The essays will go through a blind judging process by a committee of local community members and school leaders.
Melissa Sims, FCSF vice president, shared insights into the judging process:
“Scholarships are judged based on categories like academics, community contributions, and letters of recommendation. Our selection process is blind, and we score applications accordingly.”
This year, the eligibility criteria have expanded. In addition to high school seniors and spouses pursuing their first degree, spouses who are seeking a graduate degree are also now eligible to apply.
“Many careers require advanced education, and after hearing feedback from the community, we decided to open eligibility to spouses seeking graduate degrees,” Sims said.
This year’s essay questions have been tailored to fit different applicant categories to ensure that applicants’ essays reflect their unique educational stages. Sims emphasized, “We wanted applicants to think about their experiences.
High school seniors, undergrad spouses, and graduate spouses are all at different points in their educational journey, and their answers will reflect that.”
Sims offered some advice to applicants: “Take your time. Think carefully about your answer and pay attention to the essay question.
It’s one of the most important parts of the application and could make a big difference in the amount of scholarship money awarded.”
The FCSF is also accepting donations for the 2024-2025 scholarship recipients until April 20. “We can only offer scholarships thanks to the generosity of our community,” Sims said.
“Every donation helps fund the scholarships,” Campbell added that 95% of all donations go directly to scholarships, with only 5% covering administrative costs.
Tax-deductible donations can be sent to the Fort Cavazos Family Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 5299, Fort Cavazos, Texas, 76544.
Those interested in direct sponsorship opportunities can reach out to Campbell via email at president@fortcavazosscholarship.org.
Campbell expressed gratitude for the support: “Every donation is truly appreciated. We remain committed to supporting the educational pursuits of military families.”
Additionally, the FCSF is seeking volunteers. Three board positions are open for the 2024-2025 year, and they are also looking for volunteers for the 2025-2026 board year.
