HOWELL — Howell City Council is taking steps toward bringing a planned project downtown to fruition.
The project, known as the Howell Depot Lot and Walnut Street Improvement Project, is expected to include a 12,800-square-foot pavilion for outdoor markets and special events, along with a 60-by-120-foot seasonal ice rink. That’s in addition to a splash pad, a large above-ground fire pit and public seating with an enhanced parking area and additional parking spaces.
Howell City Council has been working with Hubbell Roth & Clark to finalize paperwork and renderings. The city will submit applications for a Community Development Block Grant and Public Gathering Spaces Grant.
The project is projected to cost approximately $2 million in CDBG funds. According to council, the Public Gathering Spaces Initiative aims to increase usability, accessibility and seasonality on public property.
The grants are expected to be awarded in July. If successful, the city is looking at fall design and engineering work and a construction award in fall 2024. Estimated completion is December 2025.
