Dive team recovers lost prosthesis from Milford Township lake

A man who lost his prosthetic leg in a Milford-area lake over the weekend, was reunited with device courtesy of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Dive Team.

According to a release, Brandon Smith and his 6-year-old son were floating on their raft in Milford Township’s Sunrise Lake when the prosthetic limb came off and sank to the bottom of the lake, nearly 50 feet below.

Smith had just received the artificial limb after undergoing multiple surgeries following an accident six years ago when he fell from a tree while hunting.

After calling the sheriff’s office and providing details on where the limb came off, the dive team was able to locate and recover the prosthesis in good condition within about an hour.

“Our dive team does an amazing job in a variety of conditions and circumstances,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “In this incident, they were able to make a big quality of life difference for this gentleman who obviously would be greatly negatively impacted by the loss of his prosthetic leg. I’m proud of their work every day and especially in this circumstance.”
