More than a century after his passing, a Livingston County Sheriff’s deputy who died in the of duty has been recognized.
Deputy Earl Avery was honored Monday night at a candle light memorial service at the Michigan State Capitol. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office says it only recently learned that Avery died in the line of service in 1921 due to a vehicle accident.

Sheriff Mike Murphy attended the ceremony and placed a carnation on a wreath for fallen officers and then lit a candle in Deputy Avery’s memory. Earl Avery was a World War I Veteran and was a lifelong resident of Howell.
