Cobb County has taken a big step toward improving safety for bus passengers and drivers.
Commissioners recently approved adding security guards to two major bus transfer centers: the Marietta Transfer Center and the Cumberland Transfer Center.
These unarmed security personnel will be on-site to keep an eye on public safety and respond to emergencies.
Passengers have mixed feelings about this new development. While some people feel reassured by the presence of guards, others say they already feel safe at these locations.
Jacob Gambrell, a bus passenger, shared his thoughts: “I feel like they could be doing more. Maybe putting more security guards at the bus depots. I’ve seen a lot of people fighting, arguing, and stuff like that.”
This decision comes at a time when incidents involving bus drivers and passengers have been reported both locally and across the nation.
Adding security guards is seen as a way to reduce risks and make bus travel safer for everyone.
According to Drew Ressler, Director of the Cobb County Department of Transportation, bus drivers are particularly looking forward to this added security.
Their job is already tough, and the presence of guards will help them focus on their work without constantly worrying about safety.
“They’ve got a very challenging job and anything we can do to make their job better helps. They want to ensure they can safely complete their shifts and return home at the end of the day,” Ressler explained.
The security guards will not only monitor the premises but also respond to emergencies, whether they are related to safety or health.
If the situation calls for it, they can involve the police to handle more serious incidents. This measure is intended to create a safer and more comfortable environment for both passengers and staff.
Passengers can expect to see the new security measures in place by the end of February.
