MANCHESTER, Ky. – After being in the hospital for more than six months, a Clay County mother was charged with one count of murder after her daughter died.
Kentucky State Police (KSP) say that on April 20, troopers in London were asked to help look into “a suspected physical abuse complaint involving a three-month-old female child.”
“Multiple fractures, hemorrhages, and retinal bleeding” were found in the 3-month-old girl when she was taken to Saint Joseph-London Hospital on April 29. She was then flown to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington.
The mother of the baby, 23-year-old Brianna “Morgan” Burkhart of East Bernstadt, was named as a suspect by police.
In June, a grand jury charged Burkhart with three counts of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 years old. This was revealed by FOX 56 News. On June 5, she was put into the Laurel County Correction Center. On June 7, she was moved to the Clay County Detention Center.
State police said in a news release on Wednesday that the baby died at the hospital in September.
A grand jury in Clay County charged Burkhart with one count of murder on November 7. This was reported by KSP.
Court records show that Burkhart’s bond was set at $400,000.
The case is still going on, and detectives said that more legal action is still being planned in Clay County Circuit Court.
