Christmas Storm Still on Track to Soak Southern California as Heaviest Rain Nears

Southern California, CA — A powerful winter storm remains on track to impact Southern California during the Christmas holiday, with forecasters warning that multiple days of heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding risks could create dangerous conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system is expected to bring several rounds of rain from Tuesday through Saturday, with the most intense rainfall arriving midweek. Total precipitation could reach 4 to 8 inches in coastal and valley areas and 8 to 12 inches or more in foothills and mountains by the end of the week, raising concerns about flooding, debris flows, and travel disruptions.

Officials are urging residents to prepare now, especially with holiday travel and outdoor plans expected to peak over the next several days.

Heaviest Rain Expected Tuesday Night Into Wednesday

Forecasters say the most impactful phase of the storm will occur Tuesday night through Wednesday, when a moderate to strong atmospheric river moves directly over Southern California.

During this window, rainfall totals could reach:

  • 2 to 5 inches in coastal and valley areas
  • 5 to 10 inches in foothills and mountain communities

Rainfall rates may approach 0.75 to 1.25 inches per hour at times, which significantly increases the risk of rapid urban flooding, overwhelmed storm drains, and dangerous driving conditions.

Because this period coincides with one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, officials warn that roadways could become slick quickly, with standing water and reduced visibility creating hazardous conditions.

Flood Watch Issued Across the Region

In response to the forecast, a Flood Watch has been issued for all four Southern California counties from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service cautioned that even areas not typically prone to flooding could see impacts due to prolonged rainfall and saturated ground. Burn scar locations, low-lying neighborhoods, and areas with poor drainage are considered especially vulnerable.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Clear storm drains and gutters
  • Avoid driving through flooded roadways
  • Stay alert for possible evacuation warnings near burn scars

Strong Winds Add to Storm Hazards

Along with heavy rain, strong southerly winds are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly in foothills and mountain areas.

Wind gusts may be strong enough to:

  • Down trees and large branches
  • Cause scattered power outages
  • Create dangerous conditions for high-profile vehicles

Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, park vehicles away from tall trees when possible, and prepare for brief power disruptions.

Additional Rain Possible Through the End of the Week

While the heaviest rainfall is expected midweek, forecasters say additional rounds of rain are likely to continue through Saturday, keeping soils saturated and prolonging flood risks.

Mountain areas may also see rising snow levels early in the storm before colder air arrives later in the week. Travel through mountain passes could become difficult if conditions change rapidly.

Officials Urge Ongoing Awareness

Meteorologists emphasized that storm timing and intensity could still shift, and residents should closely monitor forecasts and official alerts throughout the week.

“This is a long-duration storm with multiple hazards,” forecasters noted, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and remain prepared for changing conditions.

With Christmas just days away, officials stress that preparation now can help reduce risks as Southern California faces one of its more significant holiday storm systems in recent years.
