California Inmate Who Murdered PC World Editor Fatally Injured in Prison Fight

Folsom, California –

A fight broke out in a Bay Area prison not long ago, and the man convicted of killing PC World editor died as a result.

On Friday, following an altercation with five other inmates, Darryl Hudson, a 40-year-old man serving a life sentence at Folsom State Prison, passed away, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

His killing is being treated as a murder case.

In a home invasion robbery that took place fifteen years ago in Pittsburg, Hudson was found guilty of the death of editor Rex Farrance.

On January 9, 2007, Farrance, a senior technical editor at PC World magazine in San Francisco, was at home with his wife when a gang of masked men broke in, pistol-whipped his wife, shot Farrance in the chest, and then stole their gun safe, marijuana, and laptop.

The CDCR has begun looking into the brawl to find out who was involved and what started the conflict. Officials have been tight-lipped about how many inmates were involved in the altercation and who else was involved. As officials gather evidence and interrogate witnesses, the facility has been placed on lockdown.

“The safety of all individuals within our facilities is our top priority,” stated a representative for CDCR. “To understand the circumstances and take appropriate action, we will conduct a comprehensive investigation into this incident.”

This incident has renewed worries about prison safety in California, especially in maximum-security prisons where such incidents are more common. For a long time, people have pointed to the high inmate-to-guard ratio, overcrowding, and understaffing as reasons why violence happens so often in state prisons.

Supporters of prison reform say the government should do more to keep convicts and employees safe from harm. Given this senseless loss of life, jail reform is necessary, according to Maria Hernandez, who spoke on behalf of various prison rights groups. Prisoners ought to be able to carry out their incarceration without worrying about physical harm or even death.

Tragically, a story that started with the loss of a respected tech journalist has come to a terrible close with John Doe’s death. Despite their public silence, the editor’s family is supposedly still trying to come to terms with the tragedy and the news of Doe’s death.

More details on the incident will likely be released in the following days by the CDCR as the investigation progresses. More security measures have been put in place to keep the facility safe, but inmates are still on high alert.
