A one-time Livingston County high school principal has been named as the superintendent of an Oakland County district.
Ben Mainka of Brighton was recently chosen to be the new superintendent of Novi Public Schools. Mainka, who has been the superintendent in Swartz Creek for the past six years, was also previously the principal at Hartland High School and began his career 20 years ago as a middle school teacher in South Lyon.

Mainka says he plans to focus on mental health issues including the possible addition of social workers, counselors and school psychologists.
A formal contract with Mainka is scheduled to be discussed at Thursday’s board meeting, with his first day in the district set for Monday, July 18.
