BYRAM – A woman was shot by police in a wooded area of Sussex County on Monday afternoon. The incident happened near Camp Wheeler Road and Camp Allamuchy Road in the Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation.
Police were called to the area after reports of a woman in a car with a firearm. When officers arrived, they found the woman alone in the vehicle.
A crisis negotiator was brought in to try and calm the situation, but efforts were unsuccessful.
The woman got out of the vehicle, and during the encounter, police fired once, striking her. The woman’s firearm also went off during the situation, and it was later recovered by police.
There was some confusion about a weapon being on the roof of the car, but McMeen clarified that there was no such weapon, contrary to earlier reports.
The woman was taken to Hackettstown Medical Center and was listed in stable condition. Two officers were also taken to Newton Medical Center, though they were not seriously hurt.
The identities of the officers and the woman have not been released, and no charges have been filed yet as the investigation continues.
Mayor Alex Rubenstein confirmed that municipal police helped with the response, but no officers from Byram were injured. The union representing the officers said on X that some of the officers involved in the shooting were hospitalized.
The Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation, which spans 1,000 acres, is home to two camps – Camp Somers and Camp Wheeler. The camp is currently closed for the winter season.
