According to the CDC, at least 28 people in 12 states have contracted Listeria after eating deli meats that were sliced, and two of those people have died.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are looking into the matter and have advised people who are more susceptible to listeriosis to cook meat until it reaches a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although the cases are shown on the map below, the CDC believes that the true number of afflicted individuals is probably higher because some people got well without medical treatment and didn’t get tested. According to the CDC, a large number of individuals who became infected ate meats that were sliced at deli counters.
Everything from surfaces to hands to deli equipment can easily spread listeria. Reheating the meats to a high enough temperature will destroy any bacteria on them, even though refrigeration won’t do the trick.
