Preparing for Cold Weather Hazards
With winter storms and icy roads posing risks to travel and utilities, officials say now is the time for families to make sure they can safely withstand potential power outages or disruptions.
“Preparedness can make all the difference when severe winter weather hits,” the agency emphasized in a statement.
The National Weather Service (NWS) advises residents to have enough food, water, medications, and other essential supplies to last at least 72 hours. Families are also encouraged to include:
- Extra warm clothing and blankets
- Non-perishable foods and manual can openers
- Flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers
- A cell phone charger for use in vehicles

Pets are an essential part of household preparedness, the NWS reminds. Residents should include food, water, and necessary medications for their animals in their kits to ensure their safety during winter weather emergencies.

This advisory comes as Alabama observes Winter Weather Awareness Week, a statewide initiative aimed at educating residents about freezing temperatures, black ice, and power outage risks.
