Notifications were submitted this month under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which states that on September 3, FedEx will close four locations in North Carolina and South Carolina, affecting 310 people.
As part of its ongoing effort to reduce expenses and maximize efficiency, the business is closing down four Ship Centers: one in Conover, North Carolina; two in Florence, South Carolina; and one each in West Columbia, South Carolina, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Supply Chain Dive was notified by FedEx via email that the firm is offering severance packages or relocation assistance to affected employees and that it will provide chances at other nearby locations.
FedEx is reducing staff at four sites.

Insight: The layoffs occurred during the height of FedEx’s Network 2.0 project, which aims to cut the number of stations and delivery routes by unifying its Express and Ground networks. Faster package delivery to clients is possible thanks to FedEx’s ability to eliminate overlapping facilities and routes.

However, many company couriers are losing their employment as a result of FedEx’s efforts to right-size its network. For instance, 66 couriers will be affected by the September Conover closure, even if some employees would still have jobs at other places.
“Decisions of this nature are never made lightly, and are the result of much thought and consideration for the needs of our business,” FedEx stated.
Like the previous closures in Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas, the bulk of the workers affected by the two Ship Center closures in Ohio and Colorado last year were couriers as well.
During a March earnings call, John Dietrich, FedEx’s VP and chief financial officer, announced that the business had reduced its workforce by around 22,000 people in the previous year.
Layoffs at FedEx aren’t just happening in the US. As part of its effort to save costs across Europe, the corporation intends to lay off as many as 2,000 people from their commercial and back-office positions.
