An annual event Thursday helped to kick off the holiday season, while also honoring a local first responder who recently passed away.
On Thursday, fire crews from across the county were invited to join the Salvation Army of Livingston County for the annual Blessing of the Bells, marking the organization’s start of their holiday season fundraising efforts.
Each year, departments from around the county compete to raise the most money throughout the holiday season for the Salvation Army by ringing the iconic bells at area retailers. This year, however, the departments will be competing for the Lt. Steve Moor Memorial Award, named in honor of the Howell firefighter who passed away in October after a more than yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

The department which raises the most money throughout the bell ringing season will be receiving a trophy, with their name engraved on it.
