A suspect linked to a string of armed robberies alleged to have occurred in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago is said to have used a popular dating app, prompting the police to issue a warning to the locals. Concerned and prompted by an increase in community alertness, during the past month more than five incidents have been reported.
The heists, which have all taken place in the Austin area, have all followed the same worrisome trend. After the victims met the suspect on a dating app, they planned to meet in person, but when they got there, the suspect robbed them at gunpoint. Wallets, phones, and other valuables were demanded from the victims in each case as the suspect brandished a pistol.
According to the police, the thief was a middle-aged man in his twenties or thirties who wore a mask during the heists. Since the suspect has been able to stay anonymous by altering his looks and using different names, the investigation has become more complicated due to his ability to recruit victims using a dating app.
