MJP –
Virginia, where history, mountains, and beaches all collide in one charmingly complicated state. If you’ve ever considered setting down roots in the Old Dominion, maybe you should hold off on those moving boxes.
Here are 11 reasons why Virginia might not be the place for you (unless you enjoy Civil War reenactments and a fierce pride in both tea and tobacco).
Every corner of Virginia has a historical marker. From colonial settlements to Civil War battlefields, if you don’t love old buildings and museums, this isn’t the place for you.
The weather has a personality disorder
One day it’s sunny, the next it’s a thunderstorm, followed by a freak snow shower. Virginia weather can’t make up its mind, and you’ll be left constantly guessing.
Traffic on I-95 is a nightmare
Northern Virginia traffic will eat your soul. If you have any dreams of getting somewhere on time, prepare to leave hours early… or just cancel.
People are way too into college sports
Virginia is practically divided by college allegiance: UVA vs. Virginia Tech. If you’re neutral, expect to be caught in the crossfire of heated Hokie vs. Cavalier debates.
It’s all about the Blue Ridge Mountains
Virginia’s outdoor lovers treat the Blue Ridge like it’s paradise on earth. Hope you’re ready to hike, because everyone you meet will be trying to drag you to the nearest trail.
Beach traffic and tourists
The Virginia Beach scene is wild in the summer, meaning you’ll spend half your weekend in a line of cars. That’s if you can handle the crowds and the sand in your car.
The food is too Southern
From biscuits and gravy to Smithfield ham, Virginians are all about Southern flavors. If you’re not a fan of heavy, fried, or pickled foods, you may struggle to fit in.
The bugs are relentless
Mosquitoes, ticks, and cicadas are ready to make your life miserable. Outdoor activities come with a side of bug spray in generous doses.
The local pride is intense
Labor Movement Grows: Hotel Workers Strike Across Major U.S. Cities Including Boston and Honolulu
Whether it’s state history, Thomas Jefferson, or the fact that eight presidents were born here, Virginians will proudly remind you. A lot.
Wine country overload
Virginia has tons of wineries, and people are obsessed. If you’re not interested in weekend wine tastings, you may feel left out (and possibly very sober).
The politics are divided
Northern Virginia and Southern Virginia might as well be two different worlds, with Northern Virginia practically an extension of D.C. If you prefer your states less polarized, maybe reconsider.
You’ll never stop hearing “Virginia is for Lovers”
It’s the state slogan, and it’s everywhere. From billboards to bumper stickers, you’ll hear it so much you’ll be wondering if Virginia is for you.
So, if you’re still ready to join the crowd in Virginia, just remember: it’s a place where history, humidity, and hospitality are all served in healthy doses.
But if you can handle a little bit of state pride (and some I-95 traffic), you might just find yourself falling in love with the Old Dominion.
