Smile 2’s Shocking Death Scene: “Star Breaks Down the Emotional Toll of the Gory First Curse”

Smile 2's Shocking Death Scene “Star Breaks Down the Emotional Toll of the Gory First Curse

As the movie dominates its opening box office weekend, Lukas Gage is reflecting on his gory Smile 2 death. The follow-up to the viral 2022 horror hit sees the pop singer Skye Riley afflicted with the Smiler Entity curse just before going on a worldwide comeback tour, forcing her to confront her past demons and try and find a way to stop it. With Naomi Scott leading the Smile 2 cast, the movie is garnering large acclaim from critics and audiences alike, while also narrowly topping its predecessor’s opening weekend at the box office.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant at New York Comic Con, Gage was asked about the nature of filming his Smile 2 death. The star began by praising the special effects team who put the sequence together, recalling that “the prosthetics on this were incredible” and required a lot of preparation to “accurately” capture his smashed face:

“Yeah, the prosthetics on this were incredible. The guys who did them made a mold of my face, and they did a lot of different layering of how much impact this object was, and what this weight on my face would do to my face. Then [it’s about] accurately displaying it.”

Gage claimed that he and the team “were really going for it” and described the finished film as “legitimately the hardest for me to watch,” even though he acknowledged that the gym weight his character uses to bash his face in the sequence was made of plastic. See the remainder of Gage’s sharing below:

“Man, look. It was a plastic weight, but we were really going for it. We were going all out with it. And I’m very surprised about how jarring it is to watch because I was there on the day. I was the actor, and I was aware that there was a whole camera crew. But it is one of the things I’ve done that is legitimately the hardest for me to watch. It’s disturbing.”

What did Lewis’s death mean for Smile 2?

In Smile 2, Gage portrays Lewis, a high school classmate and drug dealer who triggers Skye’s chilling journey through his brutal suicide, influenced by the Smiler. His death, occurring after Joel’s shocking demise early in the film, catalyzes the curse to pass to Skye. Throughout the movie, Lewis becomes one of Skye’s main tormentors, reminiscent of Laura from the first film, and recreates some iconic scares.

As the plot unfolds, viewers witness increasingly graphic deaths, including Rosemarie DeWitt’s character suffering a horrific fate and Ray Nicholson’s character meeting a brutal end similar to Lewis’s. The climax reveals Skye’s tragic death at the hands of the Smiler during a stage performance, echoing the earlier deaths of Lewis and Paul. This haunting progression culminates in Skye’s possession, showcasing the film’s intense and gory exploration of fear and despair.

Our Take On Smile 2’s Gory

When it comes to comparing the first and second movies, it’s clear writer/director Parker Finn wasn’t just striving for a bigger sequel, but also one that proved far more shocking than its predecessor in Smile 2. This was made all the more evident by his recent comments that he wanted The Smiler to be “more brutal, more insane, more savage” than it was in the first film, in an effort to use audiences’ expectations of the rules and scares from the first movie against them.

Even though more gore doesn’t typically translate into a better sequel, Finn’s gorier kills in Smile 2 worked well to highlight both the physical effects and the expanding capabilities of The Smiler.

Given how hard it was to tell the difference between reality and hallucinations, some hypotheses already suggest that almost everything transpired in Skye’s head. I don’t quite agree with these views, but I still find them fascinating. I hope that if Finn decides to carry on the franchise with a Smile 3, he will not only be able to live up to the world-altering conclusion of the sequel, but also produce as many visually stunning fatalities as Lewis did.
