The tragic fall from a New York City apartment building this past weekend allegedly resulted in the decapitation of an elderly woman.
An 81-year-old woman slipped and fell from an East 89th Street high-rise on the Upper East Side on Saturday, Oct. 12, according to an NYPD DCPI spokeswoman who spoke with PEOPLE. The woman jumped from the 28th story, according to the New York Post and the police.
The woman was discovered at the location with “injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position,” according to the spokeswoman who talked with PEOPLE after police arrived at the scene at approximately 3:35 p.m. No information was provided regarding whether the woman fell accidentally when first responders later declared her dead at the spot.
“The cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner,” the spokeswoman stated, adding that the woman’s identity is being suppressed while her family is notified by the police. “The investigation remains ongoing at this time.”

“I pulled up just as she was lying there, she had no head,” a resident of the Manhattan apartment building informed the site on Saturday by phone. The opposing side had severed the skull and arm. They reached the terrace in the end.
According to a 23-year-old eyewitness who spoke with the media outlet, the woman’s clothing became entangled in a broken fence in the area.
Someone rushed to the corpse, but the witness remembered that she had already disappeared. Her torso touched down, but the fence there took a whack to her head and legs. Its twisted shape and the presence of clothing and blood stain its surface.
