Katie Castillo described her initial encounter with Macy’s as “a dull experience that no 9-year-old should have to endure” during the 2013 opening of the Victorville store.

Castillo expressed her optimism that the struggling Macy’s will not close the Victorville store, which she has frequented for nearly a decade since it first opened in the Mall of Victor Valley.

“I rediscovered Macy’s with its makeup and accessories”—Castillo told the Daily Press—when she got high school. ‘My mom and I maybe go to Macy’s once every other month at the mall.’

Out of a total of 150 stores that were supposed to be permanently closed within three years, the corporation decided against closing 50 underperforming outlets by the end of 2024.

“Many people don’t want the hassle of driving to Macy’s or other stores to go shopping, they’d rather shop online,” said Pam Clinton, a resident of Apple Valley. “Shopping, particularly at Macy’s and Target, is something I still enjoy doing.”

According to Neil Saunders, an analyst from GlobalData Retail, “The biggest things that have gone wrong at Macy’s are the quality of the stores and the product assortment.” in an interview with DailyMail. Store productivity has dropped, revenues have plummeted, and customers have abandoned ship over the years. There has been a complete and utter misalignment of all measurements.

California has more Macy’s stores than any other state with 88, and the firm boasts approximately 500 stores nationwide.

“While non-go-forward locations are underperformers relative to the total Macy’s fleet, they are valuable real estate assets,” stated Tony Spring, CEO of Macy’s, during the company’s most recent earnings call. “There has been a lot of interest in these properties.”

The opening of a Macy’s shop at the Mall of Victor Valley was announced in November 2011. After Gottschalks’ 2009 bankruptcy, the vacant anchor location on the mall’s northeast side was taken over by Macy’s.

High Desert locals had to make the trek to either San Bernardino’s Inland Center Mall or Rancho Cucamonga’s Victoria Gardens to shop at Macy’s before the March 2013 opening of the Victorville location.
