In Cleveland, Ohio — According to a state unemployment notification, Swissport, a ground service provider at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, plans to terminate practically all ground handling operations there, resulting in the layoff of over 200 people.
After 66 years in business, Cleveland’s Samsel Supply will shut down.
The company has “no other choice” but to terminate nearly all of its ground handling staff at the airport on November 4, according to a notification it sent out on September 4, after losing contracts with three airlines at Hopkins: Frontier, Air Canada, and Spirit Airlines.
By September 4th, affected employees were supposed to have been told either verbally or through the mail. A union does not represent them.

The letter states that ramp agents and passenger service agents make up the bulk of the 216 employees. The layoffs are also anticipated to affect over a dozen supervisors and managers.
In 1987, Swissport began operating at Hopkins, as stated on their website.
Companies with more than 50 employees are required by law to provide the state with at least 60 days’ notice before laying off significant workers.
