Landlord Brian Chin of New York City’s Chinatown is now facing up to seven years in jail following dramatic events where he was captured on camera assaulting a homeless man. In his defense, Chin claims he was only protecting himself throughout the fight.
Something goes wrong during a normal meeting.
At about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 32-year-old Harvard fellow and psychology graduate Chin came upon a homeless man outside the Manhattan subway entrance on the corner of Chrystie and Grand Streets.
His habit of loitering on Grand Street made him easily recognizable as a panhandler. “He has never attacked me,” Chin said.
The man continued to ignore Chin’s inquiries, so he finally asked, “Are you OK, man?” How about I just contact the police? Are you saying that I need to dial 911? Not a single thing.
In the video that Chin shared, he can be seen kicking the man, which he said was just a “tap” to see if the victim had overdosed. The number of drug overdoses, fatalities, and other horrific incidents is overwhelming, according to Chin.

Unfortunately, things got out of hand very fast. As he started destroying everything in his path, the homeless man reached for a metal folding chair. Ever vigilant, Chin was troubled by the slaying of his renter Christina Yuna Lee, which had transpired two years prior.
“Because of the murder, whenever someone starts acting violently, I prefer to stand by the front door to make sure no one is following and that all my tenants are safe,” he explained.

Upon his return from the office restroom, Chin discovered the homeless man brandishing a club adorned with nails. Then he snatched the club from behind, held it aloft, and sprang at me. If I hadn’t dodged those obstacles so many times, I might not be here today, Chin said.
The two got into a battle, during which Chin tried to take the man’s weapon away. I leap at him. I refrained from physically harming him. Using both hands, I try to grasp the weapon… He related the event in which they began to plummet to the floor. According to the footage, Chin hit the victim six times on the head before backing away and asking someone to contact the authorities.
The aftermath and the court fight
Without a means of identification, the homeless man was taken in a hurry to the hospital after suffering serious injuries. When he was finally recognized, he was hit with grave accusations.
The victim was left with merely a bleeding nose, according to Chin, who claimed to have been an Army reservist specializing in psychological operations. When the cops arrived, the man had already fallen and hit the pavement, but his more serious “eight or nine-inch” head injuries, he said. Ugh, I’m miserable. “I never want anyone to get hurt,” Chin stated.
Chin is now facing charges from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and could face a seven-year prison term, even though comments from “multiple witnesses” corroborated his self-defense allegation.
He bemoaned, “Why is my life being turned upside down, my teaching career destroyed?” on multiple occasions. “I was only trying to protect myself from an aggressor who had brandished a deadly weapon against me, so why am I now facing all of this?”
