Attention! 530 Region Residents CPUC Announces New 837 Area Code Implementation, Check Fact Now

“San Francisco -”

On January 31, 2025, the newly formed 837 area code will be superimposed over the current 530 area code region, as the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) would like to remind all Californians.

An area code overlay, which adds a second area code to the same geographic region served by the existing 530 area code, was approved by the CPUC in June 2023 in response to the overwhelming demand for new telephone numbers in the 530 area code region.

The majority of northeastern California is serviced by the 530 area code. This code encompasses or partially covers the following counties: Alpine, Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo, and Yuba.

In addition to unincorporated areas, it serves the following communities: Chico, Davis, El Dorado Hills, Oroville, Paradise, Placerville, Red Bluff, Redding, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Woodland, and Yuba City.

When customers in the 530 area code region request a new service or an additional line, they may be allocated a number in the new 837 area code starting on January 31, 2025.

Just like customers with numbers from the 530 area code do now, clients with an 837 area code will need to dial 1 + the area code and phone number for all local calls.

Facts

Some information regarding the 530/837 area code overlay is as follows:

  • There will be no change to phone numbers or area codes.
  • No other rates or services, including call prices or coverage areas, are impacted by the overlay.
  • The current definition of a local call will continue to be the same.

To make local calls within and between overlay area codes, customers in the overlay region will still dial 1+10 digits. For long-distance calls, they will dial 1+10 digits.

Even now, customers can get emergency services by dialing only three digits: 911 or 988, or 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, or 811, depending on what is available in their area.

Methods for Being Ready

When sharing a customer’s phone number with others, such as friends, family, or business acquaintances, it is important to include the area code in addition to the seven digits of the phone number. This makes the total number ten digits.

Everyone should be careful to include the area code when creating personal or commercial websites, printing checks, advertising materials, contact information, and pet or ID tags.

Continue to store or program phone numbers as 10-digit numbers and make sure that all services, automatic dialing systems, and other forms of equipment recognize the new 837 area code as a valid area code.

Devices such as medical alert systems, safety alarm security systems, ankle monitors, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail services, and wireless or cordless phones with stored contact lists are just a few examples.

You can visit the CPUC’s website or get in touch with your phone company for more details.
