Wednesday morning, over a dozen construction workers were hospitalized at Webster’s Great Wolf Lodge Water Park due to an inappropriate mixture of pool chemicals, according to authorities.
An indoor water park had a chemical problem on Great Wolf Way on the day of its grand opening, according to the Webster Police Department.
According to Dean Spencer, chief of the Webster Fire Department, personnel were dispatched to the pool house—a building distinct from the hotel and water park—in response to a complaint regarding respiratory issues brought on by a chemical reaction.
A chemical reaction caused by the contractor’s mixing of two “unlike” substances – sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid – was discovered by first responders, according to the chief.

As SkyEye soared over the scene of the accident, numerous ambulances were visible assisting. Fire officials said that 16 people, including employees and contractors, were sent to the hospital, some as a precaution after an incident occurred in the region. The fifth person was rescued from the building, according to Webster city officials.
We are not experiencing any problems with the chemicals right now. “All of them have been resolved,” Spencer announced. “At no time was the hotel or waterpark affected by this event.”
In response to their earlier request that all material be withheld until the opening ceremony celebration, Great Wolf Resort has now issued the following statement:
An issue occurred in an external facility outside of the main indoor water park and resort, caused by an external vendor. We are grateful for the prompt reaction by Webster’s first responders, as the health and safety of our guests and pack members is our priority. Thanks to the Webster Fire Department’s approval, the resort and water park attractions may open as scheduled this afternoon.
There are 532 apartments for guests to stay in, an indoor water park that’s 92,000 square feet, an adventure park that’s 61,000 square feet, and almost fifteen restaurants and shops for guests to peruse.
The property, where Hawkins had served as contractor, was reportedly nearing completion when Spencer spoke with the construction crew.
As per the fire chief, the pool is managed by two different facilities. They say it happened at the pool house where the pool is located outside.
It is yet unclear why the chemicals were mixed incorrectly, according to Spencer, who added that an investigation would be launched to find out.
On Wednesday, the Lodge’s operations were unaffected because the matter was handled promptly. The contractor, Great Wolf Lodge, and an environmental company are collaborating to clean the tanks safely, according to a news release from the city of Webster.
