Sacramento County, California — Flooding across parts of Sacramento County on Sunday prompted officials to partially close several roadways and led to the rescue of a driver who became stranded in high water, according to local authorities.
Emergency crews responded throughout the day as runoff and standing water made multiple roads unsafe for travel.
Several major roads closed due to flooding
According to the Sacramento County Department of Transportation, road closures began just after 11 a.m. as floodwaters spread across low-lying areas.
The following closures were put in place:
- Sorento Road closed between Elverta Road and Rio Linda Road
- Kiefer Boulevard closed from Jackson Road (Highway 16) to Kiefer Landfill
- Scott Road closed between Boys Ranch Road and Latrobe Road
Officials said the closures were necessary to protect motorists from driving into dangerous conditions.
Driver rescued near Kiefer Boulevard and Jackson Road
Later in the afternoon, crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were dispatched to a rescue involving a stranded vehicle.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., firefighters responded to the area of Kiefer Boulevard and Jackson Road, where a driver became stuck in floodwaters.
Metro Fire confirmed the driver was safely rescued without reported injuries. However, the vehicle remains in the flooded roadway and will not be removed until water levels recede and conditions are safe for recovery operations.
Officials warn drivers not to bypass road closures
Fire officials emphasized that the incident could have been avoided and urged residents to take road closure signs seriously.

Metro Fire reminded the public not to drive around barricades or signage blocking flooded roads, noting that even shallow-looking water can hide strong currents or road damage beneath the surface.
Flooded roadways remain one of the leading causes of weather-related rescues, especially during winter storms.
No timeline given for road reopenings
The Sacramento County Department of Transportation has not provided an estimated time for reopening the affected roads. Officials said conditions will be reassessed as water levels change.
Drivers who encounter flooded roadways are encouraged to report them by calling 311, allowing crews to respond more quickly and place warning signs if needed.
Authorities urge continued caution
With wet weather impacting parts of Northern California, officials are asking drivers to remain alert, slow down, and plan alternate routes when possible.
Emergency responders stressed that avoiding flooded roads helps keep both motorists and first responders safe.
