The man who died after being in a fight with a school security officer is being looked into by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
A Glynn County School Resource Officer was told on May 21 about a person who was upset on South Port Parkway.
It took place outside of Brunswick’s Risley Middle School, about 100 yards from the land. The Glynn County Police Department was also called to help.
Brunswick resident Isaias Gomez Pena, 38, can be seen on the ground in a video sent to our sister station Action News Jax. The man died soon after the meeting from what the GBI called a medical emergency.
The GBI said that the SRO and Pena talked to each other, which caused more police to come help the SRO.
People said his driver pulled over because he needed air so badly and said he had heart problems in the past. People in his family said he got out of the car to breathe, and that’s when the school security officer showed up.
He was finally thrown to the ground and tased, Pena’s family said, and they think he died of a heart attack. The GBI agent in charge of the case said that there is no proof that a Taser was used. They also said that a bystander was hurt after getting engaged, but only slightly.
“Calm down,” someone can be heard saying.
A different person said, “We need this hand.”
A school security officer told Pena, “I want to get him cuffed.” Pena then groaned.
“May I take him to the hospital?” Why do you want to do that?” says a lady in the video that was sent to Action News Jax.
A school security officer was heard saying in the video, “Right now, we’re just trying to get him under control.”

People in his family said he never got into trouble. Action News: Jax asked if he had a criminal record, and the only report they got was of a fight that ended with him getting hit. The cops and schools in Glynn County told Action News Jax they had nothing else to say.
Someone took Pena to Southeast Medical Hospital, but he didn’t make it. There will be an investigation by a GBI Medical Examiner.
Anyone who was in this area between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the crime should call the GBI.
