Boston, Massachusetts — As the calendar edges closer to 2026, excitement is building across the city for First Night Boston 2026, a milestone celebration marking the event’s 50th anniversary. Now firmly established at City Hall Plaza, the annual New Year’s Eve tradition once again promises a full day of family-friendly activities, live performances, fireworks, and iconic winter attractions across downtown Boston.
Here’s everything you need to know before heading out to ring in the New Year.
First Night Boston 2026 schedule and main events
Despite the name, First Night Boston kicks off early in the day, offering activities for all ages well before the countdown to midnight.
Festivities begin around 10 a.m., with family-focused programming including sing-alongs at Boston Public Market. By midday, visitors can enjoy archery lessons on the Boston Common, while ice skating performances take place throughout the afternoon at the Frog Pond.
Live music at City Hall Plaza begins at 2 p.m., with Boston-based rock band Leaving Irene opening the stage. The night builds toward a late-evening finale as The Sultans close out 2025 with a performance starting at 11:30 p.m. All concerts are free and open to the public, though attendance is first-come, first-served.
For those preferring an earlier celebration, the First Night Parade leads crowds from City Hall Plaza to the Boston Common in time for the 7 p.m. fireworks display. A second, larger fireworks show will light up the sky at midnight, officially welcoming 2026 from City Hall Plaza.
Public safety and security measures in place
With tens of thousands expected to attend events across the city, officials say safety planning is a top priority.
“Boston Police Department will have officers in and around the First Night celebrations both in plainclothes and in uniform capacity to help keep people safe so that everyone can enjoy this day and night,” said Police Commissioner Michael Cox.
City officials are reminding visitors that alcohol and drugs are prohibited, and no drones will be allowed during the celebrations. Emergency responders are also urging people to look out for one another.
“Don’t let somebody wander off. If they’ve had too much, take care of them, make sure you get them home safe,” said Jim Hooley, Chief of the Boston Emergency Medical Services.
Mayor Michelle Wu echoed those sentiments, encouraging residents and visitors to celebrate responsibly as the city welcomes the New Year. Roadblocks and pedestrian-only zones will be in effect around major event areas to manage crowds and enhance safety.

Getting to First Night Boston 2026
Officials strongly recommend using public transportation due to limited parking and expected congestion in the downtown area.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will increase service on the Green, Red, Orange, and Blue lines starting at 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, with trains running until approximately 2:45 a.m. on Thursday.
A major perk for attendees: all MBTA services, including Commuter Rail, will be free starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve through the end of service. Buses and ferries will also be free, with bus routes operating until 2:55 a.m.
Parking restrictions will be in effect on multiple downtown streets, including Boylston Street, Tremont Street, Beacon Street, Cambridge Street, Arlington Street, Atlantic Avenue, and surrounding areas near City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common. Drivers are urged to review posted signage carefully to avoid fines or towing.
First Night Boston ice sculptures return
One of First Night’s most anticipated traditions—the ice sculptures—will return once again to mark notable milestones across Massachusetts.
The sculptures will be on display from 12 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day. While most can be found at City Hall Plaza, additional pieces will appear in Charlestown, East Boston, and the Seaport District as part of the popular ice sculpture stroll.
In past years, displays have included sea turtles honoring the New England Aquarium, shark designs, and even replicas of the iconic Citgo sign, drawing crowds throughout the afternoon and evening.
New Year’s Eve weather forecast for Boston
Weather conditions are expected to cooperate with this year’s celebrations, though attendees should dress for winter temperatures.
Forecasters predict afternoon highs near 32°F, with temperatures dipping into the 20s by midnight. Winds may reach 10–20 mph earlier in the day before calming to 5–10 mph overnight. A weak weather system could bring light snow early Thursday morning, but snowfall is expected to hold off until after midnight, minimizing disruption to New Year’s Eve events.
