Winter Weather Advisory Expanded Across Massachusetts as Freezing Rain Threatens Travel

Boston, Massachusetts – A WEATHER ALERT is in effect across much of Massachusetts as a winter weather advisory expands into additional counties, bringing the risk of freezing rain, icy roads, and hazardous travel conditions Sunday night into early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory now includes parts of Plymouth, Bristol, and Suffolk counties from 7 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Monday. Several other counties remain under advisory conditions through 6 a.m. Monday, raising concerns about the Monday morning commute.

Advisory Expanded to Multiple Counties

As of noon Sunday, forecasters confirmed the winter weather advisory applies to a wide stretch of the state. In addition to Plymouth, Bristol, and Suffolk counties, the alert also covers Franklin, Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Hampden, and Norfolk counties.

Meteorologists say changing temperatures overnight will create conditions favorable for freezing rain, especially after sunset when surface temperatures drop.

Freezing Rain Expected in Southeastern Massachusetts

In Plymouth and Bristol counties, freezing rain is expected to be the primary threat. Forecasters anticipate a light glaze of ice, enough to make sidewalks, bridges, and untreated roads slick and dangerous.

Even minimal ice accumulation can significantly reduce traction, particularly on elevated surfaces such as overpasses and highway ramps.

Highest Ice Totals Forecast in Western Massachusetts

The greatest ice accumulation is expected across western Massachusetts into the Merrimack River Valley, where ice buildup could reach around two-tenths of an inch, according to the National Weather Service.

This level of icing can lead to hazardous driving conditions and may increase the risk of minor power disruptions in isolated areas.

Officials Warn of Hazardous Travel Conditions

Weather officials are urging residents to use caution, particularly during overnight travel and early Monday morning.

“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,” the National Weather Service warned. “Difficult travel conditions are possible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute, especially northwest of the I-95 corridor.”

Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips during the advisory window as conditions can deteriorate quickly once freezing rain begins.
