Police Discover Two Baby Crocodilians Inside Yonkers Home During Unrelated Arrest

Yonkers, NY – Police officers in Yonkers, New York, made an unusual discovery earlier this month when they found two baby crocodilians inside a residential apartment while carrying out an arrest on unrelated charges.

The animals were identified as illegal reptiles, and wildlife authorities were called to the scene to safely remove them. Officials say the case highlights the strict regulations surrounding exotic animal ownership in New York State.

Discovery Made During Unrelated Police Investigation

According to the Yonkers Police Department, officers and detectives were inside an apartment on Post Street late in the evening of Dec. 9 when they discovered the animals.

Police said the reptiles were found while officers were conducting an arrest unrelated to the animals themselves. Once the discovery was made, authorities immediately contacted wildlife specialists to ensure the animals were handled safely.

“The appropriate wildlife specialists were called to the scene to take custody of the animals,” the department said in a statement.

State Wildlife Officials Take Over the Case

The following day, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed it had received a report involving illegal possession of reptiles without a license or permit.

According to the agency, officers issued multiple tickets to the individual found with the animals for violating state wildlife laws. New York requires special permits for all crocodilian species, regardless of size or age.

Officials said the animals were transferred to a properly licensed facility for care and evaluation.

Reptiles Identified and Placed With Licensed Caretaker

The two animals were later identified as a Morelet’s crocodile and a dwarf caiman, both species native to regions far outside the United States.

A licensed reptile owner and conservationist confirmed that the animals were placed in his care following their removal. He said both reptiles appeared generally healthy, though one showed minor injuries.

In a social media post, he explained that the Morelet’s crocodile is native to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala and can grow up to 9 feet long, while the dwarf caiman originates from South America’s Amazon and Orinoco River basins and can reach about 5 feet in length.

Strict Laws Govern Exotic Animal Ownership in New York

Wildlife officials emphasized that all 27 species of crocodilians require a special license to possess in New York, regardless of whether the animals are juveniles.

Authorities say the regulations exist to protect both public safety and animal welfare, as crocodilians require specialized care, secure enclosures, and professional handling.

Illegal possession of exotic animals can result in fines, citations, and seizure of the animals, officials said.

Investigation Focuses on Animal Welfare, Not New Charges

At this time, authorities have not announced any additional criminal charges beyond the wildlife violations related to illegal reptile possession. Police have also not released details about the unrelated arrest that led officers to the residence.

Officials confirmed the animals are now safe, legally housed, and under professional supervision.

Wildlife authorities continue to urge residents to verify licensing requirements before acquiring exotic animals, reminding the public that improper ownership can pose serious risks to both people and animals.
