Twin Falls, Idaho — A powerful windstorm sweeping through southern Idaho left two children critically injured Wednesday after trees and power lines came crashing down in Twin Falls, according to local authorities.
The incident happened as the children were waiting for their school bus, when strong wind gusts caused multiple trees to fall, bringing down overhead wires and creating dangerous conditions in residential areas.
Strong winds topple trees and power lines
The Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office said the injuries occurred after old, internally rotting trees were uprooted by intense winds. As the trees fell, they knocked down nearby power lines, striking the children.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the children were transported for medical treatment. Authorities confirmed both remain in critical condition, though no further details about their ages or identities were released.
Wind gusts reached near-hurricane force
According to the FOX Forecast Center, wind gusts in Twin Falls reached 50 to 60 miles per hour throughout the day. The strongest reported gust hit 68 mph around 9:55 a.m. MST, placing the storm’s intensity near the lower threshold of hurricane-force winds.
The extreme gusts caused widespread hazards across the area, including falling debris, downed trees, and damaged power infrastructure.
Officials urge public to stay alert
In response to the dangerous conditions, the sheriff’s office issued a public safety warning urging residents to remain cautious, especially around vulnerable structures and vegetation.
“Strong winds can bring down weakened trees, power lines, and debris without warning,” the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media statement. “Your awareness and caution can help keep our community safe.”
Officials specifically warned residents to avoid areas with large, aging, or visibly weakened trees, as well as unsecured outdoor items that could become airborne.
Wind advisory remains in effect
A Wind Advisory remains in effect through 5:00 p.m. MST, with authorities cautioning that conditions may remain hazardous until winds fully subside.
Law enforcement advised families to consider safer locations for children waiting for school transportation and to remain indoors when possible during peak wind conditions.
Weather conditions monitored closely
Local and state officials continue to monitor the situation as cleanup efforts begin. Utility crews were also responding to downed power lines across parts of the city.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on changing weather conditions through official channels, including the National Weather Service, and to report downed power lines or hazardous debris immediately.
Community shaken by sudden incident
The incident has deeply affected the Twin Falls community, highlighting how quickly severe weather can turn dangerous — especially during routine moments like waiting for a school bus.
Authorities emphasized that while such wind events are not uncommon in Idaho, gusts of this strength significantly increase the risk of falling trees and infrastructure failures.
As the investigation continues, officials reiterated that public safety remains the top priority while crews work to restore normal conditions across the area.
