28-Year-Old California Officer Killed in Crash During Pursuit; Colleagues Mourn ‘Dedicated Public Servant’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A tragic police pursuit in the early morning hours has left an Alhambra police officer dead, prompting an outpouring of grief from law enforcement agencies across Los Angeles County. Officer Alec Sanders, 28, was killed Thursday after a fleeing SUV slammed into his patrol vehicle, ending the chase in a violent collision that also killed a female suspect.

Officer Killed During High-Speed Pursuit

According to officials, the incident began around 3 a.m. when Alhambra officers attempted to stop an SUV occupied by three suspects. The vehicle fled, leading police on a pursuit through city streets.

During the chase, the suspect SUV crashed directly into Sanders’ patrol vehicle, the impact described as catastrophic. One female suspect was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities told.

Sanders was found unconscious and not breathing inside his crushed patrol SUV. First responders rushed him to Los Angeles General Medical Center less than four miles away, but he was pronounced dead several hours later.

A Devoted Officer

Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy confirmed that Sanders had volunteered to work an overnight shift to cover for another officer, showcasing the sense of dedication many of his colleagues say defined him.

The department memorialized Sanders in a heartfelt statement on Facebook, describing him as:

A dedicated public servant, a trusted partner, and a caring friend. He was known for his unwavering reliability and deep sense of discipline both on and off duty.”

They added that Sanders served “with honor, integrity, and courage,” and that his sacrifice “will forever be remembered.”

Career and Service

Sanders joined the Alhambra Police Department in April 2025, after previously serving one year with the Long Beach Police Department.

In that short time, colleagues said he made a significant impact through his work ethic, professionalism, and compassion.

A procession later escorted his body from the hospital to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office, where dozens of officers from agencies across the region lined the streets in solemn tribute.

Community and Agency Response

The crash sent shockwaves through local police departments, many of which expressed condolences and support across social platforms.

Alhambra police publicly thanked community members and partner agencies, noting:

We sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support from our law enforcement partners and community members. Thank you for standing with us as we honor Officer Sanders’ life and service.”

Sanders leaves behind his fiancée, parents and two younger siblings, prompting law enforcement leaders to emphasize support resources for grieving families and officers struggling with the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Investigation Ahead

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is now reviewing dashcam, bodycam, and surveillance footage as part of its probe. Investigators have not yet released the identities of the surviving suspects or confirmed whether charges will include felony murder, which is likely when a suspect’s actions lead to the death of a police officer.

Police also expect to examine whether the fleeing driver was under the influence, armed, or otherwise attempting to evade arrest for an outstanding warrant.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as they continue gathering evidence.

A Community in Mourning

As tributes continue to pour in, many reflect on Sanders’ life as one committed to protecting others.

His death marks yet another reminder of the risks taken daily by officers across California. In response, police officials have encouraged residents to support the Sanders family and acknowledge the sacrifices made by those in uniform.

A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days, and agencies from across the state are expected to attend. For now, Alhambra police say their priority is honoring Sanders’ legacy and supporting his loved ones.
