5-Star Safety Trey McNutt Pushes Back Ohio State Commitment

5-Star Safety Trey McNutt Pushes Back Ohio State Commitment

Trey McNutt has reportedly changed his mind and will reveal his college decision on August 3rd instead of Friday, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3. This is a huge alteration from Friday.

In the 2025 recruiting class, the Shaker Heights, Ohio native and five-star safety is both Ohio’s top prospect and the state’s top safety overall.

The five schools that were supposed to be on his list were the following: Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, USC Trojans, and Florida Gators. Predictions from 247 Sports’ Crystal Ball and On3’s recruiting prediction machine percentages show the Oregon Ducks, who are now part of the Big Ten Conference, as heavy favorites for some time.

According to the prediction computer, the Ducks currently have a far greater than 90% probability of acquiring McNutt.

Given that everyone was getting ready for his pledge to Oregon later today, this turn of events could have far-reaching consequences. In all likelihood, it will inspire optimism among the other four institutions and, conversely, dampen confidence among the Duck faithful.

According to Steve Wiltfong of On3, McNutt is 30% invested in the Texas A&M Aggies and 70% in Oregon. One possible explanation for the holdup is that Texas A&M made a late push, which added mystery to the situation. Here, we just don’t have any idea.

The Ducks will suffer a double whammy if they lose McNutt due to the commitment announcement postponement; on Wednesday, they lost No. 1 cornerback Dj Pickett to the LSU Tigers instead of Miami, Florida, and Oregon. While he may still go with Oregon, he may simply need more time to fully commit to his decision and eliminate any doubt.

In all likelihood, the Buckeyes will benefit from this extra time. Instead of visiting Columbus, McNutt recently made official visits to four other colleges.

May the fact that his father, Richard McNutt, was a Buckeye from 1999 to 2002 sway his choice? He might want to take the short drive down I-71 before committing on August 3rd.

Whatever the case may be, the Ohio State Buckeyes may have a fighting chance at snagging another elite recruit in the 2025 class if this moment goes their way.
