Alabama Mall Loses a Key Tenant as Major Retailer Closes Doors

Fans are now over 70 miles away from the closed store as a large retailer shutters its doors at an Alabama mall, according to sources.

Gamers in the neighborhood were forced to go farther to get their favorite titles after popular “meme stock” and gaming retailer GameStop closed another outlet.

Seen as the final GameStop still operating in the city, it was located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, approximately 69 miles west of Huntsville.

On GameStop‘s website, it is stated that the store, which was housed within Southgate Mall, is currently permanently closed.

After visiting the shopping mall just a few weeks prior, fans also said recently that they had arrived to find it closed.

Consumer Jo Hanson posted on Facebook, stating, “The larger store in MS is closed.”

For Muscle Shoals gamers, Jo and a few others pointed out that Florence, which is roughly ten minutes north of the shuttered Southgate Mall store, would be the closest location.

“The Florence location is still open, but I think the Muscle Shoals location closed,” another customer cried.

A screenshot of the Florence location showing as open on Google Maps was shared by a third person to corroborate.

According to Statista’s data, GameStop has about 2,900 locations in the US.

Los Angeles, Florida, and Texas are home to the majority. Florida has 190, California has 263, and Texas has 300 stores. Texas has the most.

The business has intermittently closed stores over the last few years.

A gaming mainstay in the Clay, New York, area—roughly 14 miles north of Syracuse—was shuttered by GameStop in August.

Syarcuse.com stated that the establishment operated for several years before the removal of the sign and the emptying of the shelves. Moreover, GameStop closed at least 243 locations between 2021 and 2022.

Yet, according to a financial report from March 2022, GameStop appears to be making a stable profit in 2023 and 2024 following a $147.5 million deficit in that same month.

In a 2018 earnings call, CEO Matt Furlong emphasized that “GameStop is a much healthier business today than it was at the start of 2021.”
