According to Walgreens, the closures are a component of a larger optimization plan that will take place over many years.
“We still have a challenging operating environment, with ongoing pressures on U.S. consumers and the effect of recent changes in the marketplace that have reduced pharmacy margins,” CEO Time Wentworth stated.
He disclosed that approximately 25% of outlets do not support the company’s long-term goals.
He went on, “We’re wrapping up an optimization program that we anticipate will involve closing a big percentage of these locations over the next three years.”
“To improve the experience for patients and customers, we are also investing in many initiatives and actions.”
