Avangrid, a leading energy company and part of the Iberdrola Group, has signed a short-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP). This agreement focuses on supplying energy from Avangrid’s Blue Creek project in Ohio. The deal ensures that Blue Creek will continue to provide reliable energy to the region and support rural Ohio communities through jobs, payments to landowners, and tax revenue.

She stated that the agreement with Avangrid helps diversify their power supply portfolio and protects participating member utilities from the unpredictable wholesale energy market. AMP is a nonprofit wholesale power supplier and service provider for over 130 members across nine states. Its members receive power from a mix of sources, including wholesale purchases through AMP and energy produced at AMP and member-owned generating facilities. Collectively, AMP’s members serve about 650,000 customers.
Avangrid collaborates with 15 utilities and municipalities in the Midwest to deliver domestically produced power to families in need. Together, these partnerships supply 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of contracted electricity from 17 Midwest energy projects, enough to power approximately 330,000 homes. These collaborations not only ensure reliable energy for customers but also support over 100 local jobs for technicians who maintain these projects year-round.
Located in Van Wert and Paulding Counties in Northwest Ohio, Blue Creek is a 304-megawatt (MW) wind power project that began commercial operations in 2012. The project created over 500 construction jobs, with most equipment manufactured and assembled in states like Wisconsin, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota. Annually, Blue Creek generates enough energy to power about 76,000 homes.
Over the past decade, Blue Creek has been a vital economic resource for the region. The project supports 18 full-time jobs for ongoing operations and maintenance and provides about $3 million per year in lease payments to local landowners. Since its inception, Blue Creek has paid over $30 million in property taxes, supporting various public services in the community.
