In Valdosta, homeowners now have a chance to get major home repairs or even a full rebuild through the city’s CDBG program.
The program is designed to help families with significant home improvement needs. Last year, the city council set aside $422,631 for housing repairs, making it easier for families to make necessary changes to their homes.
Applications for the 2025 program are open, and they are reviewed on a first-come, first-qualified basis.
The city is already receiving repair requests from homeowners who need everything from small fixes to full reconstructions.
The program is especially beneficial for seniors and families in need of peace of mind.
Community protections manager Anetra Riley emphasized that applicants need to own their homes.
“You can have a mortgage, but you can’t have a lien,” she said. This means that the program is aimed at people who truly need the help and meet certain qualifications.
For families like Deshonda Jenkins and her mom, Mary Myers, the program has made a huge difference.
Two years ago, their old, worn-out home was completely rebuilt through the program. They now enjoy a better quality of life, with fewer worries about the condition of their home.
The application process may take some time, as there is a vetting process that includes checks by the attorney and historical preservation officers.
But for the Myers family, it was worth the wait. “It was well worth the wait,” said Myers. “I take you back to the Scripture, ‘They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.’”
While the program is helpful, it’s important to note that due to limited funds, not all applicants will receive assistance.
The city council will allocate funds once they determine how much they’ll receive from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development.
In Valdosta, the wait for the full process can take at least eight months, but for families in need, it’s a crucial lifeline to improve their homes and their lives.
For more information, check with the city’s housing department to apply and find out if you qualify for the CDBG program.
