71-Year-Old Arizona Man With Brain Tumor Seriously Injured in Random Dog-Walking Attack

Phoenix, Arizona — A 71-year-old man with a long history of serious health challenges is recovering after a violent and unprovoked attack while walking his dog in a Phoenix neighborhood earlier this month, an incident his family says nearly cost him his life.

Jeff Zimmerman, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor more than 16 years ago, was attacked on December 13 while out for a routine walk near his home. According to his daughter, Kiera Zimmerman, a person riding a bicycle suddenly approached him and began beating him without warning, knocking him to the ground.

The assault left Zimmerman critically injured and required emergency medical intervention.

Attack Interrupted by Strangers

Zimmerman’s daughter said her father likely would not have survived if not for the actions of two strangers who happened to be nearby at the time of the attack.

According to family accounts, the passersby intervened immediately, physically pulling the attacker away and stopping the assault.

“But the fact that they were right place, right time is literally an act of God,” Kiera said in an interview. “He’s okay because of these two strangers who stepped in.”

In a fundraising post created to help cover medical and living expenses, Kiera wrote that the intervention directly saved her father’s life, calling the strangers’ actions heroic.

Severe Injuries and Hospitalization

Zimmerman suffered severe head trauma, multiple broken bones, and an eye injury, according to his family. Due to the seriousness of his injuries and his age, doctors monitored him closely in the intensive care unit for four days before transferring him to a trauma unit.

The assault also worsened existing health complications related to his brain tumor, which has already caused chronic headaches, balance issues, and vision problems.

“Given his age and the seriousness of his head injuries, doctors have had to monitor him extremely closely,” his daughter wrote. “He is in immense pain and is only at the very beginning of what will be a long and difficult recovery.”

Long History of Medical Challenges

Zimmerman has lived with a brain tumor for over a decade and a half, undergoing numerous surgeries and treatments over the years. His daughter said hospitals have been a constant part of their lives.

“My very first memory is in the hospital with him,” she shared. “He’s had all the surgeries you can imagine.”

Despite his health struggles, family members describe Zimmerman as resilient, humorous, and deeply loving.

“Despite chronic headaches, vision problems, and balance issues, he remains the funniest, most spirited soul alive,” Kiera wrote. “He lights up every room he enters.”

Police Investigation Ongoing

Phoenix police confirmed that charges have been filed in connection with the attack. However, authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or released further details about the investigation.

Officials have not commented on a possible motive, and it remains unclear whether Zimmerman was targeted randomly or if the suspect had prior contact with him.

Financial Strain and Community Support

Zimmerman’s family estimates that medical expenses related to both the assault and his existing condition could exceed $200,000, creating a significant financial burden during an already difficult recovery period.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family has raised more than $30,000 toward a $35,000 goal, with donations continuing to come in from community members and supporters.

“I can’t even be upset,” Kiera said. “I’m just so thankful that he’s alive.”

Looking Ahead

Zimmerman now faces months of recovery, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care. His family says the road ahead will be challenging, but they remain focused on gratitude — especially for the strangers whose quick action changed everything.

As the investigation continues, the family hopes the case will bring accountability while also highlighting the importance of bystanders stepping in during emergencies.
